Soil Moisture Sensor

Function:
The farmIT soil moisture sensor utilises the Teros 10 probe which is a research grade instrument that is built to last for up to 10 years in the field under harsh conditions. The farmIT soil moisture sensor is deal for large networks, and is sensitive to small changes in water volume across the entire range of soil types.

If you’re planning a large soil water content sensor network and want more measurements for less investment, without compromising accuracy or reliability, then plan to use the easy, affordable, and ruggedized farmIT/Teros 10 soil moisture sensor.

Specification:
– measures volumetric water content in all soil types
– generic calibration accuracy ±0.03 m³/m³
– medium specific calibration ±0.01–0.02 m³/m³
– can be installed in borehole or trench
– uses capacitance technology
– estimated life up to 10 years
– cable length 3m (different lengths can be provided on request).

Installation:
The farmIT sensor should be mounted on a galvanised steel pole using the cable ties provided. A trench installation of the probe and ferrite core is best for shallow installations (less than 40 cm). This requires digging a trench with a shovel, excavator, etc. The sensor is installed carefully by hand into the undisturbed soil of the trench sidewall. The trench is then carefully backfilled to preserve the bulk density of the soil and to avoid dislodging the installed sensor by accidentally snagging the ferrite core. For deeper installation a borehole works best with a special tool used to insert the sensor into the side wall of the hole at the required depth. Contact farmIT for specific details if required. Correct installation will ensure accurate and relaible readings for many years to come.
